JEFF
MUHS
Jeff Muhs is a contemporary American artist known for both his paintings and sculptures. Engaged in exploring art history as well as using found materials, the artist’s practice includes blurred versions of Titian paintings, expressive abstractions based on the Long Island landscape, and concrete sculptures of female torsos tightly bonded by bikinis. Those sculptures fascinated me in a way that normal material like concrete can be shaped and shifted into bodily form and blending in with the object that covered it. To me, these sculpture also bring me back to the concept of health anxiety where our minds exaggerate the visual of our illnesses in our heads. I'm not sure about the intention behind each piece, but to me, the use of concrete made me feel heavy, the use of corset made me feel uncomfortable as if I am experiencing some mental illness or anxiety. The feeling of imprisoned was pouring out. The base materials harden itself while also trapped within social attributes that framing them in the form of each object.
