GIAN LORENZO

BERNINI

Gian Lorenzo Bernini dominated the Roman art world of the seventeenth century. His sculptures reveal an innovative interpretation of subjects, use of forms, and combination of media. His work in 'Bernini: Sculpting in Clay' is such a perfect example of his skills and methods. Each of his work shows the action of the artist’s hand as he molds the clay. Beneath Bernini’s fingers, volume is placed under pressure and shaped and reshaped into the magnificent sculptures. The details of draperies, hair, and skins on his work stir thoughts about my own folded fabric of my work. By sculpting marble the positive space of the work has been carefully reduce to present the figure inside the chunk of marble, revealing the unseen figure hidden in each materials he uses. My methods would be similar to his, but in the opposite way. I tried to reveal the hidden details beneath by gradually reduce the negative space. Finding the folded of context lies within my own drawing practise.
