MILENA
NAEF
‘Fleeting part’. A stunning work by Milena Naef, Amsterdam-based artist, is also interesting in term of internal and external body. She carved away a large piece of marble to create spaces to frame parts of her body. Naef now bears the weight of her work to represent both strength and fragility. The artist also said that
“Due to the inevitable presence of our bodies, I believe that we define ourselves through the constant interaction we are forced to have with our surroundings. Our own creations have allowed us to appropriate, to cultivate and to reflect upon the spaces we inhabit.” (Quote from Milena Naef’s website)
I found this work interesting since she is trying to break through the external part that surrounding her. Her body is inevitable, so much that it pierces through the weight on her and give us a glimpse of herself underneath those marbles. Her external space was interrupted and merged with the internal part that comes out.
