ALTERED

CARBON

A while ago, I have an opportunity to watch the series called ‘Altered carbon’. A sci-fi show that takes place in the future, where people’s bodies can be switched and living forever is a reality. People’s consciousness and memories are stored in devices called stacks. These stacks can be implanted into bodies (either physical or synthetic) called sleeves. The concept of transhumanism has been used to express immortality within the story of futuristic life. The link between internal and external has been shattered and formed up again on a different platform. Every time a person is re-sleeved, the conscious would transfer to a new sleeve which is not just a skin, but also the bone structure, muscles and other internal organs. If I were transferred to a new sleeve, new body, would I still constantly check on my body every time I breath? Or would the new sleeve force me to change my behavior and gradually change my conscious. The guilty pleasure of the smoking that normally happened would be replace with a new type of pleasure from a new lung. The arm stretching behavior from upper arm pain would be gone since there is no pain to relief anymore. The memory of the muscle would be gone and so does the memory of the pain which would be left only in our minds. This makes me question the system that used to send out the command signals from inside out, the outer part starting to determine what the inner should reacts.
