LEONARDO
DA VINCI
Leonardo da Vinci has always been considered as one of the master artist till this day. His anatomical studies construct the idea of how human body function, not just the external but also the internal organs as well. He probed deeply in to the brain, heart, and lungs as the motors which significant to life, connecting to other organs and muscles, covered each section with skins and form a human body. Leon Battista Alberti, Leonardo's forerunner as artist, had written that " Isolate each bone of the animal, on this add its muscle, then clothe all of it with flesh." in On painting which has become the bible for Leonardo. I find this sentence simplified the human body to its minimum in three section, Bone as structure, Muscle as connection, and flesh as mantle. As an artist who works with bodily elements, I personally think it is crucial to study the art of anatomy to understand how it function and to adapt those understandings in the artwork. Leonardo's anatomical art chiefly focus on the details, not just how it looked but also how each organs connected to each other forming the invisible connection to others. The drawings are precisely drawn to expose the hidden parts beneath the skin that are not visible to the eye, showing the elements inside out. These process of dissecting organs from the outside by drawings has inspired me to try and misplaced those elements of human and restructure the body to use them as a tools in the artwork.
